What causes swelling and Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a condition that occurs when lymphatic fluid builds up in the body’s tissues, often causing swelling —most commonly in the arms or legs. This fluid is part of the lymphatic system, which helps protect the body from infection and maintain a healthy balance of fluids.
When the lymphatic system becomes damaged or blocked, it can struggle to circulate this fluid properly. Instead of flowing through the lymph nodes and vessels, the fluid collects in one area, leading to discomfort, swelling, or a heavy feeling in the affected limb.
What Causes Lymphedema?
Lymphedema can develop for various reasons, including:
* Infections
* Inflammatory conditions
* Surgery or trauma
* Cancer treatment (such as lymph node removal or radiation)
* Scar tissue that restricts fluid flow
In Australia, secondary lymphedema—which develops after treatment for conditions like breast cancer—is more common than the primary, genetic form. It may appear weeks, months, or even years after treatment.
How Massage Can Help
A gentle, specialised style of massage known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can support lymph flow and help manage symptoms of lymphedema. This type of massage encourages the movement of fluid through the lymphatic vessels (much faster than it can do on its own), aiming to reduce swelling and improve comfort.
At Touch Body Mind, MLD is used with care and intention to support each person’s individual health needs and is tailored accordingly.
If you’ve experienced surgery, injury, or ongoing swelling, it may be worth adding lymphatic drainage massage into your recovery or wellbeing plan.
